The Miami Valley Literacy Council offers many programs for adults, children and families. Anyone who is interested in improving their literacy skills can find different programs to fit his or her needs.
Literacy Training and Volunteer Opportunties:MVLC trains volunteers to tutor adults and children. The main training that MVLC conducts is the Basic Literacy Tutor Training. We also train tutors for Miami Valley READS throughout the school year. We will also conduct trainings for other organizations at another site. If you are interested in have us come to your site for a training, please contact us.
Adult Basic Education Classes and Tutoring:Adult students wanting to improve their reading, math or writing skills can come to MVLC for classes throughout the day. Also, students can be matched with a volunteer tutor to work with once or twice per week to help them improve their reading skills.
English as a Second or Other Language Classes and Tutoring:Foreign-born students wishing to improve their English language skills can come to MVLC for classes througout the day. Also, students can be matched with a volunteer tutor to work with once or twice per week to help them improve their speaking skills.
LEAF (Literacy Education for Adults and Families) and Learning Links:The LEAF program helps students who are ready to start the process of getting a GED. Learning Links helps students get referrals to educational programs and other services. Learning Links also operates a Resume Shop to help individuals write a resume to use in finding a job.
TLC (The Learning Club):The TLC program is for children and teens needing tutoring. After-school tutoring, summer camps, Jump Start programs, and teen parenting/literacy classes are available. The Back Pack Project:The Back Pack Project is for MVLC students who have a tutor. Students can get a back pack which contains children's books and an activity to go with the books. The student practices reading the books with his or her tutor then takes the books home to read to his or her children. All books and activities remain in the student's home created a home library.
